Academy Status

We held a meeting with parents at 6 p.m. on Thursday 15th Juy 2010.

The meeting included a presentation about the reasons for choosing to apply for academy status and provided an opportunity for questions and discussions on any areas that people were unclear about.

Academy Status

We are coming to the end of another excellent year and I am writing to tell you about a change in status for the school.  In the past the school had been Grant Maintained up until 1997; became 11-18 in 1997; a Visual Arts College since 2005; a Leading Edge School since 2009 and at a recent meeting the governors of the Giles School were unanimous in their decision to apply to become one of the Government’s new Academies.

Obviously the we feel this exciting change is in the best interest of the children and of the staff.  We believe that it will:

•    Improve the curriculum
•    Give us a fairer say in what buildings the school needs – the new swimming pool is the first of such buildings and this should be completed by February  2011.
•    Give us 10% more income.
•    Enable us to continue supporting any school that needs our help and advice.
•    Give us independence from time wasting bureaucracy.
•    Concentrate on learning and on providing a high quality learning environment.

I can assure you that this change has the support of the staff including the Headteacher.

Should you wish to discuss any aspect of these points or any other points, I am sure the Headteacher or Deputy Headteachers would be delighted to speak to you, as would I.

Best wishes

Frank Pickett
Chair of Governors

Giles School 50th Anniversary

The Giles School 50th Anniversary will be in 2012. The first students started on the 10th January 1962 and the school officially opened on the 16th July 1962 not the planned date of 21st May. We are beginning to think about how to celebrate this fantastic event and would like to hear any ideas that you may have.
